The short list
These are the cars people keep asking about when they want something cheap, old and manual. Prices move, so check the live listings rather than trusting any number in a guide.
- Mazda Miata. Light, simple and easy to work on. Check for rust in the sills.
- Honda S2000. High-revving and well built, with prices that have climbed.
- Nissan 240SX. Rear-drive and loved by drifters, so inspect for abuse.
- BMW 3 Series (E36). Great chassis, but the cooling system needs attention.
- Honda Civic Si. Cheap fun, often modified, so ask what has been changed.
- Porsche 944. Buy on belt service history.
- Subaru BRZ. The newest of the group, with the best manners.
How to shop
Mileage matters less than records. Read the seller story and the known issues, then get an inspection.
